Stonewall at 50: stories from a gay rights revolution | Books | The Guardian

he Stonewall riots started in the early hours of 28 June 1969 during a police raid at the Stonewall Inn, Greenwich Village, a favourite haunt of gay and lesbian New Yorkers. As customers were hauled out in handcuffs, the crowd outside erupted into fury. That night’s rioting was followed by days of further violent demonstrations in the neighbourhood. It would change LGBT activism for ever. The riots switched protest up a gear and pushed for an unapologetic, inclusive, enlightened culture in which gay pride would see off shame for good.

Hospital Accused of Secretly Recording 1,800 Women During Intimate Procedures Is Sued by 131 Patients

ast Friday, 81 women filed a lawsuit against a San Diego hospital for allegedly recording them during intimate medical procedures without their knowledge or consent. Women were filmed during Caesarean births, birth complications, treatment after a miscarriage, and other operations, according to the lawsuit. On Thursday, 50 additional women joined the complaint against Sharp Grossmont Hospital.

“The addition of 50 plaintiffs to the lawsuit demonstrates that Sharp’s misconduct affected a significant number of women in a deep and harmful way,” Allison H. Goddard, their attorney, told Gizmodo in an email. “We expect to add more plaintiffs in the near future, since many women are just learning they were secretly recorded by Sharp. Sharp could have, but did not, inform the women directly about the secret recordings, so we will continue to work very hard to make sure that every woman affected is aware of her legal rights.”

Lucy Flores on Joe Biden: 'I Want Him to Change His Behavior'

When asked by CNN’s Jake Tapper what she would say to critics who accused her of being “politically motivated” in her decision to speak out about Joe Biden’s inappropriate behavior, former Nevada assemblywoman Lucy Flores said: “I would say politics was definitely the impetus.”

In her response, Flores upended the script that women are expected to follow, one in which they must play defense against cynical, sexist attacks that insist women come forward against powerful men for fame or personal gain. Instead, Flores, a former candidate for Nevada’s lieutenant governor, said she told her story at precisely this moment because Biden is now considering running for president. Addressing his behavior with women should be part of that vetting process. It is, in other words, absolutely political.

Despite Being Unable to Spell Menstrual, Scott Lloyd’s ORR Tracked Teens’ Periods on a Spreadsheet

Last spring, a judge ruled that incompetent scumbag Scott Lloyd and his shit show Office of Refugee Resettlement (ORR) could no longer prevent underage refugees from legally seeking abortions. However, new documents suggest after the ruling, he continued to track pregnancies in order to do just that.

MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow revealed documents unearthed by American Bridge, a liberal super PAC, that seem to indicate Lloyd and the ORR were tracking the periods and pregnancies of refugees ages 12-17 as recently as June 2018. The 28-page document was in spreadsheet format, with columns recording deeply personal information such as whether the pregnancy was a result of consensual sex, “gestational age,” and last menstrual cycle (it’s spelled “mentsral” in the spreadsheet).

Testing Rape Kit Backlog Leads to Over 1,000 Arrests Nationwide

After New York City cleared its own rape kit backlog, the Justice Department and Manhattan District Attorney’s office in 2015 awarded nearly $80 million in grants to help address the national backlog on rape kits. The result of that effort, the Associated Press reports, is more than 1,000 arrests and hundreds of convictions according to officials.

The Manhattan District Attorney’s office poured $38 million into a grant that tested a backlog of 55,252 rape kits and has led to 186 arrests and 64 convictions across the country. The Justice Department, meanwhile, funded testing through a parallel initiative for an additional 45,000 rape kits that resulted in nearly 900 prosecutions and 500 convictions and plea bargains nationwide.

Breast ironing awareness ‘needed in school’ – BBC News

Breast ironing awareness should be made part of the mandatory school curriculum to protect young girls from abuse, the National Education Union has said.
The practice involves ironing a girl’s chest with hot objects to delay breasts from growing, so she does not attract male attention.
Conservative MP Nicky Morgan said teachers must also be educated, as they have a “very important role to play”.
The Home Office said teachers have a duty to report concerns.

Irish PM brings partner to meet Mike Pence and delivers pointed remarks on sexuality | US news | The Guardian

The Irish prime minister, Leo Varadkar, who is openly gay, brought his partner to a meeting on Thursday with the US vice-president, Mike Pence, a conservative Christian once dubbed “the face of anti-LGBTQ hate in America”.

Varadkar, who is in Washington this week to reaffirm the longstanding shared history between the two countries, brought his partner, Matt Barrett, to a St Patrick’s Day breakfast at the vice-presidential residence at the Naval Observatory.

Varadkar tweeted that he and Matt had received a “warm reception” at Pence’s home, but in pointed remarks to Pence and gathered media, he also called out various forms of discrimination.

Shannon Lee Goessling, OVW Nom, Says Arming Women Prevents Rape

Donald Trump’s nominee to lead the Department of Justice’s Office of Violence Against Women is a former prosecutor and rightwing culture warrior who notably believes that women who are armed with guns are less likely to be raped. Surely this will all end well.

While the nomination of Shannon Lee Goessling was announced in June and a hearing date has not yet been set, anti-violence organizations are mobilizing to play defense. Part of that has included publicizing her record on violence against women and related issues that would come under her purview in the office. Goessling does not have a long career working on issues of violence against women; even as the White House highlights Goessling’s time as the “head [of] the Crimes Against Women and Children Unit in Georgia’s largest county,” her own LinkedIn profile states that she was only in that position for nine months.

Sexual Abuse of Immigrant Youth in Federal Custody is Rampant, According to HHS

These numbers point to a reality that has been clear for a long time: that putting immigrants in detention creates conditions that are ripe for abuse and exploitation. The HHS numbers echo a ProPublica report from July 2018 that found hundreds of incidents of abuse at ORR-run shelters housing immigrant children, from sexual abuse to other violent incidents. In 2017, one worker at a Southwest Key detention center in Mesa, Arizona was charged with sexually abusing at least eight immigrant boys under his care, and last year, another worker at a Phoenix shelter run by Southwest Key was arrested after he was alleged to have molested a 14-year-old girl. As Lisa Fortuna, the director of child and adolescent psychiatry at Boston Medical Center, told ProPublica at the time of the ORR shelter system report: “If you’re a predator, it’s a gold mine.”
